What is a Hospitalist?

Hospitalists are board certified doctors who specialize in caring for hospitalized patients. Elkhart General’s Hospitalists work with your primary care doctor and specialists to ensure that you receive high-quality health care during your hospital stay.

Does the Hospitalist Work With my Doctor?

Even though you may not see your primary care doctor during your stay, your primary care doctor and Hospitalist will communicate about the plan for your care. The Hospitalist will also send information to your primary care doctor to help ensure a smooth transition when you go home.

How Does a Hospitalist Benefit Me?

Having a Hospitalist is similar to having a primary care doctor with you in the hospital throughout your stay. Hospitalists at Elkhart General are available seven days a week and 24 hours a day, providing ongoing and immediate care. Your Hospitalist is also available to answer any questions or concerns you or your family may have. In addition, Hospitalists are familiar with every department and specialist at Elkhart General to help ensure you receive the most appropriate care.

What Happens When I Leave the Hospital?

Your Hospitalist will communicate with your primary care doctor to help ensure a smooth transition when you go home. If you have questions about your health after discharge, please call your primary care doctor.
