Restrictions to Hospital Visitation Policy Aimed at Reducing Spread of H1N1
October 20, 2009

ELKHART, IN – Today, Elkhart General Hospital announced changes to its visitation policy effective Friday, October 23, 2009. On October 23, no visitors under the age of 18 will be allowed in any section of the Hospital.

“Due to the severity of the H1N1 flu and its potential to spread to patients, children, and expectant mothers, we feel this is a necessary safety precaution,” according to David Van Ryn, MD, Medical Director, Emergency Services at EGH.

Like many hospitals in the state implementing a similar policy, health officials at Elkhart General want to take every precaution possible to limit the risk of exposure to the H1N1 flu. To enhance the safety of those in the hospital, EGH is also providing H1N1 vaccines to hospital employees.

The hospital will work with families on a case by case basis if the visitation is necessary given the patients condition or if there are extenuating circumstances. The family would need to contact the nursing supervisor in such a case.

The hospital will have signs posted at each entry way to remind the public about the new visiting policy. The policy is expected to remain in effect until the end of the flu season.
