Cardiac Rehabilitation

Heart disease continues to be one of this country’s major health problems. Fortunately, today, much more can be done to help patients suffering the symptoms of this disease. After having coronary surgery, suffering a heart attack, or demonstrating the symptoms of heart disease, many people find the recovery process may at times seem confusing and difficult.

Elkhart General Hospital has designed the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program especially to help restore coronary patients to optimal health status and to help them through this difficult time by offering information, advice, an exercise program, and careful monitoring of their rehabilitation plan.

What is the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program?

The program has been especially designed for people who have experienced a heart attack within the past 12 months, who have had bypass surgery, angioplasty, or who are experiencing stable angina. The Cardiac Rehabilitation staff uses a multidisciplinary team approach, working with you and your physician to formulate a program which will produce the greatest benefits. Each individual’s goals are then modified as the program progresses to maximize your rehabilitation process.

The program includes information about three main areas of concern:

  1. Education
  2. Exercise
  3. Lifestyle changes

The program is available as an outpatient service consisting of three meetings per week, each lasting one hour in length, over a 4 to 12 week period, for a total of 12 to 36 sessions. You can be admitted to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program upon referral of your primary physician.

Benefits of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Elkhart General believes that through exercise you can begin to change your lifestyle and start on the road to improved health. It is important, when formulating a program, to exercise in the hospital where your progress can be carefully and continually monitored. The benefits of the exercise program include:

  • Improved efficiency of the cardiovascular system
  • Improved stress management
  • Enhanced psychological wellness
  • Lower cholesterol levels
  • Preparation for a safe return to work and/or normal activities
  • Initiation of a personalized exercise program to be followed at home
  • Improved energy and endurance
