Cyst Aspiration

At the Elkhart General Breast Center, we perform Cyst Aspirations for patients with large painful cysts to relieve pressure and pain. These are usually scheduled so that the Radiologist who is specially trained to do this will be here. We recommend visualization by ultrasound so the needle can be seen entering the cyst and completely draining the cyst.

Another reason for Cyst Aspiration would be for evaluation of a complex cyst that is not completely simple fluid.

Preparation

  • Eat normally
  • No aspirin, ibuprofen or blood thinners 48 hours before the procedure
  • You may drive yourself or bring a friend or family member
  • After the procedure, if no tissue is taken and only fluid is removed, there are no restrictions placed on the patient
