Chemotherapy is sometimes done prior to breast cancer surgery to shrink the tumor. Frequently chemotherapy kills enough of the tumor that it would be hard to know where to do surgery. The clip placement marks the area where the cancer is located so the area can easily be localized for surgery.
When chemotherapy and surgery are planned, the patient is sent to the Breast Care Center for the clip placement. This is usually done under ultrasound guidance much like the core biopsy and is followed by a mammogram to document where the clip is prior to the chemotherapy.
