Doctor Selection Tips

Finding a doctor who is right for you and your family can be challenging. There are many things to consider, such as location, office hours, qualifications, and insurances.

The toll-free Health Information Center and physician referral line is staffed by registered nurses who work with a computer that is loaded with detailed information about more than 200 Elkhart General physicians.

Consider the following when you begin your search:

Doctor's background

You can learn more about a doctor by simply calling his or her office. A medical assistant should be able to explain the doctor's qualifications and education, as well as years in practice, and answer specific questions you may have.

Location

You may want to choose a doctor whose practice is near your home or workplace.

Office hours

Depending on your work schedule, babysitter or school hours, you may want to consider a doctor with flexible office hours.

Age and sex

People have different physician preferences-younger or older, male or female. Before scheduling your first appointment, don't hesitate to call and ask.

Payment

It is very important to inquire about methods of payment before scheduling an appointment. Ask if the doctor accepts personal checks, credit cards, Medicare, Partners Health Plan, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, or other HMOs and PPOs. Also ask about terms of payment, and make sure your physician participates in your health plan.
