Opportunities for High School Students

Elkhart General Healthcare System has unique opportunities for high school students who want to explore a career in health care and get some hands-on experience along the way!   We invite you to join us for one of our student programs including Job Shadow Days where students of all ages have a chance to spend a day at EGH, learn about the many careers in health care, and take a tour of the hospital.  Our Career Exploration and Co-Op programs are a unique way to decide if a career in health care is right for you and to discover what areas of health care ignite your passion.

Career Exploration/Internship

Want to spend time with a healthcare professional in your field of interest?  The Career Exploration/Inernship program gives students an unpaid, semester experience in a variety of healthcare fields.  You must be recommended by your high school counselor to be eligible for this program.

Job Shadowing at EGH

Have you been thinking about a career in health care, but aren’t quite sure what field is right for you?  If so, you should check out our job shadowing program.  Pick the fields you are most interested in exploring.  Then spend a full day with a member of our EGH staff in your assigned department.  You will visually experience everything they do throughout a typical day.  Also, your host and other staff members will be on hand to answer all of your questions throughout your experience, so be sure to do some research and think about all the things you’d like to see and learn while being part of our EGH team!  Shadow Day is held two times per year.  You must have documentation of a tb test within the last 12 months.  Ask your high school counselor for more information and to receive an application.

Applying

All opportunities and programs will be made available through your high school guidance counselor's office.  In most cases a selection process is in place with both parent and counselor approval.  Check your guidance office and be listening to school announcements for the upcoming shadowing days with EGH.
